And the nominees are … Vancouver Nov. 19 civic election slate set

VANCOUVER — Nominations for the Nov. 19 civic election in B.C. closed on Friday.

According to CivicInfoBC, which hosts the province’s official civic election website, the full list of candidates should be posted by early next week (the week of Oct. 17). Civic elections in B.C. are run by the municipalities, which are responsible for entering the candidate names into the official website. The public can view the candidate lists at www.elections.civicinfo.bc.ca/2011/.

In Vancouver, there are 94 candidates for the 27 positions on council, the park board and the school board. On election day, voters will elect one mayor, 10 city councillors, seven park commissioners and nine school trustees for a three-year term. At the same time, there will be a referendum on the city’s capital spending plan. Continue reading

New slates De-Growth Vancouver and Neighbourhoods for a Sustainable Vancouver fielding multiple candidates

Ninety-four candidates are seeking to fill the 27 positions up for grabs in Vancouver’s 2011 civic election after nominations closed at 4 p.m. Friday (October 14).

Vision Vancouver incumbent Gregor Robertson faces 11 challengers for the mayor’s chair.

Forty-one candidates are gunning for the 10 spots on city council. Twenty-one hopefuls are going for the seven seats on the park board. The nine-seat school board has garnered 20 contenders.

Eight slates are represented by the candidates. The long-running Coalition of Progressive Electors, Green Party of Vancouver, Non-Partisan Association, and Vision Vancouver are being joined by the fledgling De-Growth Vancouver, Independent Democratic Electoral Alliance, Neighbourhoods for a Sustainable Vancouver, and Vancouver Citizen’s Voice. Update: Public Hearing for Shannon Mews passed by Vision Vancouver Majority

After over 160 speakers signed up for the public hearing on Shannon Mews that lasted over three nights, the Vision Vancouver majority approved the application. Shannon Mews Public Hearing finished last night at 2:15 am. It was approved in a 6:4 vote.

David Cadman, Ellen Woodsworth, George Chow and Suzanne Anton voted against. Mayor Gregor Robertson, Raymond Louie, Geoff Meggs, Heather Deal, Stevenson, and Andrea Reimer voted for the development. Kerry Jang was absent.

On the evening of 26 July 2011 at 6:00 pm,, aproximately 150 people from communities across the City of Vancouver gathered on the front steps of city hall to declare that the Vancouver system of planning and rezoning is broken and needs fixing.

Working with Shannon Mews Neighbours’ Association (SMNA), CityHallWatch called Vancouver residents to gather in front of City Hall just ahead of major public hearings on 488 units at 105-167 West 2nd Avenue, and 735 units at 7101-7201 Granville (Shannon Mews). Speakers from a broad range of neighbourhoods explained their concerns and how they are being impacted by unsupported development. Continue reading
